Because Diversity

Paul Mirengoff:
The U.S. limits legal immigration.  If one person is granted legal status, typically it is at the expense of someone else who wanted it, at least in theory.

I've never understood how it is in America's interest to grant legal status to Muslims [sic] immigrants instead of non-Muslims with similar skills.  Listening to Sarsour's remarks convinces me that doing so is not in our interest.

Health Care Repeal?

John Hinderaker:
Got that?  The Republicans are repealing health care.  Apparently health care was nonexistent until 2010.  And Pelosi doesn’t mention the millions who had health insurance, but lost it because of Obamacare.
I really wish everyone would be more careful about distinguishing between health care and how we pay for health care when discussing this issue.

Brought to you by Democrats

John Hinderaker:
Liberals love to talk about slavery.  In fact, kids who go to public schools could get the impression that the only thing that happened in American history between 1600 and 1964 was slavery.  Unfortunately, involuntary servitude is long gone, the Republican Party having disposed of it by brute force.  So now, apparently, we need a fantasy to bring it back so liberals can pretend they are as heroic as the Republicans of 150 years ago.

Feminism...Progressive Style

This is old, but still worth posting.  From the BBC:
But Ms Linde told the Aftonbladet newspaper that she was not willing to break Iranian law.  She said that since the only other option would be to send an all-male delegation, she was required to wear a headscarf.
Um...how about not doing a trade deal with barbarians?  More here and here.

Declaration

About the Declaration there is a finality that is exceedingly restful. It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning cannot be applied to this great charter. If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers.
-President Calvin Coolidge
