Spoiler Alert: He Voted Communist

John Hinderaker:

Is it really appropriate for Robert Prevost to vote in an American election, now that he is the head of a foreign state? It is a reasonable question. Moreover, one wonders why the Vatican made a point of publicizing the Pope’s casting a mail-in ballot in Illinois. Are they trying to encourage turnout on behalf of candidates who share the Pope’s views on illegal border crossings by members of criminal gangs?

We probably will never know how Robert Prevost voted, of course. But it is reasonable to ask: did he cast his ballot in favor of pro-life candidates, as Catholic doctrine would seem to require? If so, they all would have been Republicans. Or did he put doctrine aside and vote for the pro-illegal immigration, pro-MS-13 party?

The Socialism Project

John Hinderaker:

The bottom line is that liberals are making it difficult if not impossible for most young people to buy a first home. Then those same liberal politicians try to take advantage of the resulting social discontent to advocate for socialism, which can only exacerbate the existing, government-caused problems.

But socialists don’t worry much about that. As the current adage correctly holds, you can vote your way into socialism, but you have to shoot your way out. Which is hard to do, when the left-wing government has all the guns.

The Battle of Our Time

John Hinderaker:

When we think about the last 200 years of immigration into the United States, the goal was, virtually always, assimilation. Come to America, adopt American values and customs, become an American. The fact that many Muslims have rejected this assimilationist tradition in favor of a weird sort of separatism—integrated only, it seems, into the political world, as allies of the far Left—poses perhaps the greatest challenge that America faces today.

The failure of huge numbers of Muslims to assimilate is manifested in everything from terrorist attacks to countless billions of dollars in theft from government programs to ridiculous levels of welfare consumption. The problem is real, and everything that El-Sayed did as an academic was calculated to make the problem worse, and America weaker.

High Stakes for The West

John Hinderaker:

The French establishment wants the upcoming presidential election to be about new desks and protractors for students, while most voters think the election is about whether France will or will not survive in recognizable form.

A Decade Late

Ed Morrissey:

How do we know this was a political calculation? The reliance on the criminal statute of limitations in this case has always been weak. The DOJ and DHS always had the option of pursuing a civil/administrative case against 'Omar' over her false identity and fraudulent naturalization. Identifying Ahmed as her brother should have easily led to exposing the 'Omar' dodge, which Scott did almost from the beginning. Tugging at those threads would have unraveled her father's lies about being a teacher rather than a high-ranking officer in Siad Barre's genocidal military, lies that would have given the Obama-era DHS plenty of cause to denaturalize 'Omar' and send her entire family packing back to Somalia.

The most remarkable part of this NY Times story is that it adds hardly anything to the evidence already available to the public about 'Omar,' her sham marriage, and her identity. What it does accomplish is that it strips 'Omar' of her one defense that has kept the media at bay — that these are just unfounded allegations by right-wing activists. The documentation of the Obama administration's suspicions rebuts that nonsense rebuttal and reinforces the truths that the evidence reveals. 'Omar' is a fraud and a fraudster, and one has to suspect that the Trump administration may find plenty more evidence of other questionable activities in its full-bore probe of 'Omar' and her finances, too.

Just to be clear: this illegal alien is voting on our nation's laws.

More from David Strom:

One of the many scandals she has survived in her now-long political career is the immigration fraud accusations that have dogged her for years: her alleged marriage to her obviously very gay brother in order to get him a Green Card. Unlike many "asylees" who pretend to be gay in order to get permanent resident status in Western countries, Omar's brother could be a host on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy or RuPaul's Drag Race.
And yet more from Scott Johnson here.

Don't Put Life Losers in Charge

Francis Menton:

In my post several days ago on October 18, I recounted the story of how ignorant Chinese Communist Party ideologues in the late 1950s convinced themselves that they knew how to achieve limitless agricultural production by just ordering each community to produce large, arbitrary amounts of food. Do you want to double grain production? Then just plant twice as many seeds in the same acreage! The ideologues had no idea how agriculture actually worked in the real world. Within a couple of years, there was widespread famine, probably the largest in world history. Tens of millions died horrible deaths of starvation.

At the end of that post I noted that, here in the West, equally ignorant ideologues were engaged, actually for a few decades now, in ordering up an energy transition to replace electricity generation by fossil fuels with generation mostly by intermittent wind and sun. Today’s energy transition ideologues have a lack of knowledge of how an energy grid works that is comparable to the ignorance of the Chinese ideologues of agriculture. How is this one working out?

Causation

John Hinderaker:

These are amazing numbers, and represent a remarkable success on the part of the Trump administration. Other policies may also be pertinent, but it seems obvious that closing the Southern border and deporting large numbers of criminal illegal aliens have made all Americans safer.
But according to little libertarian weirdos like David Bier, such policies make Americans, or, as he views it, those present in America, less safe.

They're All Gazans

John Hinderaker:

The entire Gaza phenomenon is baffling. On October 7, Gazans showed themselves to be the most depraved, perverted and murderous people on the planet. And yet, instead of the universal horror and condemnation that one would have expected, their attempt at genocide brought them international support and even popularity.

I can’t imagine that these young Italians care anything about Gazans. They certainly don’t care about Syrians, Lebanese, Egyptians, Jordanians, Saudis, or any other Arabs. Or about any other Muslims, most notably the Iranians, who suffer under horrific tyrannies. I think their purported pro-Gaza activism is nothing more or less than a particularly virulent form of anti-Semitism. They want to globalize the intifada, which is to say, kill the Jews wherever you can find them.

I am not an expert on the history of the 1930s, but it seems to me that the anti-Semitism we are seeing today, primarily in Western Europe and in North America, is more widespread than during that era. Not only that, it enjoys the support of much of the Western establishment, i.e., most of that part of the establishment that is on the left. Anti-Semitism has become a sort of secret handshake by which the “right” people (i.e., the Left people) can identify one another.

We are living in dark times.

Oops

Bill Glahn:

At the time, Ilhan came up with some half-baked excuse as to why she referred to her father by her husband’s last name. That’s the thing about lies: you have to live then 24/7/365. One slip up and you give the game away.

The 'Omar' Database

Scott Johnson:

Three reporters have independently investigated what I call the curious case of Ilhan Omar: me, Preya Samsundar, and David Steinberg. David has now compiled a selection of our work to document the case for newcomers and other interested readers. It is not exhaustive, but it is invaluable.
More here and here.

The Red-Green Alliance vs. The West

Auguste Meyrat:

If history and theology are any guide, there is even more uniting these two factions. Davidson correctly points that “on issues like women’s rights, transgenderism, gay marriage and the sexual revolution in general, [Islamists and radical leftists] are not aligned.” But these differences are mere window dressing to their core similarities: spreading their ideology through aggression and confiscating the wealth of others.

These two principles are fairly well known as features of communism, but most Westerners have been conditioned not to associate them with Islam. Nearly all Western schools, underfunded or otherwise, have done their utmost to obscure the fact that Islam was spread by the sword as well as by theft. As historian Raymond Ibrahim details in his classic history Sword and Scimitar: Fourteen Centuries of War Between Islam and the West, starting with the Prophet Muhammad and continuing with his many successors, Muslim armies would invade, pillage, terrorize, and enslave neighboring kingdoms, forcing their populations to submit to Allah, face martyrdom, or live as second-class citizens (dhimmis).

Besides its unbridled military aggression, Islam’s expansion was greatly aided by its parasitic approach to war and government. When it comes to winning battles, the deciding factor often comes down to logistics: Whoever could better supply and compensate an army would usually win. For most of history, generals fed and paid their armies through the spoils of war, allowing soldiers to plunder their enemies’ riches and enslave their people. For Christians, such actions are gravely sinful, but in Islam, they are fully allowed in the name of spreading the faith.

Deserving

Ed Morrissey:

Well, let's talk about "deserving" in this context. Why would people who broke the law to get into the country and then often break the law to get work that undercuts low-income American labor "deserve" subsidies from these same taxpayers? El-Sayed and the rest of the Medicare for All Democrats want to end private health insurance and force all Americans into a closed system of socialized medicine without any choice. El-Sayed and his allies then want to force taxpayers to fund elective surgeries for people who haven't legitimately paid into that closed system at the expense of those who do.

All in the Family

Scott Johnson:

In her memoir Omar herself refers to Barre as a dictator. He was notorious for the widespread commission of war crimes by his army. While Omar omits any mention of her father’s military career, Sahan Journal omits any mention of Barre’s notoriety. Among other things, between 1987 and 1989, Barre set out to destroy the Isaaq clan, the largest of the peoples of the State of Somaliland. Suffice it to say that Barre was a bad, bad guy.

As is always the case with Omar’s misdirection, Omar’s silence regarding her father’s real occupation in Somalia must be purposeful. Did the United States knowingly afford refugee status to Soviet-trained officers in the military of Siad Barre? Maybe. But did Omar’s father disclose his career in the Somali National Army in connection with his emigration to the United States? The misdirection of Omar’s memoir makes me wonder.

We have an illegal alien in Congress. It seems like that should be a big deal.

Also:

Omar has not lived a life that anticipated the scrutiny that accompanies a high-flying career in American politics. A brazen quality infuses her deceptions. She has nevertheless been afforded a wide berth by virtue of an identitarian offense — “There are people who do not want an East African, Muslim woman elected to office and who will follow Donald Trump’s playbook to prevent it” — and a sympathetic press. And yet her deceptions may be catching up with her.

And, from Bill Glahn:

Huh. How about that? To answer The Nation's rhetorical question, media and Democrats have been keeping quiet because they know that she’s guilty. Of what, exactly? It doesn’t really matter, Omar has played fast and loose with the rules, for so many years, something significant was bound to come out at some point. She’s just that reckless.

Litmus Test

John Sexton:

It's not a silly question, it's a litmus test: Do you support terrorism? That's not a silly question in this case because there is reason to believe that Khalil does support Hamas. The group he helped lead at Columbia clearly did support Hamas and violence. It said so directly. It handed out Hamas-authored literature. It praised the mastermind of the 10/7 attack.

So answering the question definitely would get us somewhere. We would know for certain if Khalil supports Hamas instead of having to guess based on clues. But really, at this point, it's not much of a guess anymore. Khalil supports Hamas and that's the real reason he won't answer.

When Your "Neighbors" Are Barbarians

David Strom:

Democrats have a Somali problem, and it's unlikely to go away any time soon.

For years, the Somali community and the Democrats have been joined at the hip, and the Democrats have made no secret of the fact that they are willing to go to the mat to defend Somalis come hell or high water. We keep hearing that Somalis built the state, are our "neighbors," the 'fabric of Minnesota," and the most prominent Somali politician in the country is Ilhan Omar, who is so unabashedly Somali that she actively campaigns as Somali first, Minnesota second.

The Fall of Minnesota

John Hinderaker:

The roots of the fiasco lie deep; this video of Senator Amy Klobuchar reveals the attitudes that made industrial-scale fraud inevitable. Klobuchar was actually proud of the fact that she made it easy for Somalis to send money back to their home country; it turned out that much, likely most, of that money was stolen from Minnesota’s welfare programs. And in a sea of Somali flags, Klobuchar sees nothing but DFL votes. Assimilation? Who needs it?

Don't Eden Prairie My City

Bill Glahn:

As far as I can tell, Eden Prairie is represented at every level of government exclusively by Democrats. They have shaped this once-tranquil suburb into what it is today, with the inevitable consequences. To not accept the status quo would be to endanger Democrats’ monopoly on political power, by angering a constituency they rely upon to win elections. So nothing will be done. Acceptance will continue.

National Interest

David Strom:

The obvious question to Suzuki is: Why should the Japanese government, which represents the interests of Japanese citizens, care? Obviously, once somebody is in Japan, even as a noncitizen, the government has a duty of care to at least a minimal standard.

But when setting up policies regarding who you bring in with an eye toward permanent residency, the interests of somebody living in Afghanistan or Pakistan shouldn't really be near the top of your list of concerns. Nobody expects Pakistan to ask, "If I do this, will it benefit a Japanese person?" That is absurd. Governments exist to serve their own citizens first, with others a distant second.

That runs counter to the core of the transnationalist ideology, which sees national borders as accidents of history and geography. We are all one big salad that should be tossed together, don't you know?

It's the sort of idea that got us the movement to make everybody learn Esperanto, and that assumes that the United Nations could really be a governing body.

In other words, it's a special combination of stupid and idealistic that we used to call sophomoric, because it has a superficial appeal that collapses on contact with reality.

But there it is; it's the reigning ideology of the people who own the cultural and economic high ground in developed countries.

It's Because They've Been Taught to Hate the West

John Hinderaker:

What could possibly be going on here? I assume that if you asked young people whether the law should endorse husbands beating wives, or homosexuals being executed, virtually none would say Yes. But somehow, many young Americans have gotten a positive view of Sharia, whether they know anything about it, or not.

Perhaps this is due to our appallingly bad schools, but still: can there possibly be many public schools that push Sharia law on their students? Or maybe it’s the popular culture, but again: what movies, TV shows, podcasts and the like are pro-Sharia?

It really is a mystery. But somehow, a great many young Americans are being indoctrinated into an alien ideology that is utterly incompatible with our system of government or our mostly free civilization. I can’t explain how this has happened, but we should all be concerned about it.

They Have to Leave

Bill Glahn:

Recalling my work on habeas corpus cases filed in Minnesota, several cases involved Somali noncitizens with criminal convictions whose legal status was in the process of being revoked. As for asylum seekers, if their applications were denied, they have to go back, regardless of whether they’d accumulated any American criminal convictions along the way. The idea that merely seeking asylum means that you automatically get it, forever, should not be how it works.

This “worst of the worst” framing implies that immigration laws only apply to convicted felons and to no others. If you overstayed a visa, you have to leave. If you crossed the border without authorization, you have to leave. Otherwise, we have no borders.

"Minister"

John Hinderaker:

That is sheer stupidity, of course, but it is a special kind of stupidity. Why, after all, would someone who doesn’t believe in the basic facts and principles of Christianity want to be a minister? Maybe they think it’s just being a social worker, only with a better clientele. Or maybe it is one more instance of the Left infiltrating, and perverting, every modern institution.

I also note that a lot of these nutty ministers are women. I have noticed the same thing in my own experience. Maybe the Catholics are onto something in that regard.
